Tithe
Genesis 14:18-20
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. [19] And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: [20] And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
What is a tithe?
The word “tithe” literally means tenth or 10%. A tithe is the first 10% of your income.
The bible gives us both the pattern and principal of giving in the Old and New Testament, and holds great blessing for the believer who follows such. We understand that Abraham, the father of the faith, has set the fundamental precedence for giving when he gave tithes to Melchizedek 430 years before the law was given by Moses, as a free will offering that exhibited his trust and dependence upon God. We likewise are to walk in the steps of Abraham trusting and looking to the Lord to prosper us for our unselfish act of faith, trusting the Lord as it pertains to finances.
By giving us the first example of paying tithes, Abraham teaches us that the Lord is the owner of everything and that he is our source and sustainer when we participate in carrying out his work. The tithes support will help us build and effectively carry out the vision and touch the world for the cause of Christ.
